The 2014 Pritzker Prize was recently awarded to architect Shigeru Ban. Known for his innovative use of materials and his compassionate efforts in disaster relief around the world, I first discovered his work while reading about the Cardboard Cathedral, opened in 2013 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Built in response to the devastating 2011 earthquake that severely damaged the city's original church, the Cardboard Cathedral seats 700 people and consists of cardboard tubes and walls made of shipping containers. It will serve as a transitional space while the Christchurch Cathedral is rebuilt.
